“Only about 1 percent of stars are known to host massive planets or brown dwarfs that can be directly photographed with today’s telescopes.”
Astronomers using the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii identified a massive exoplanet and a rare brown dwarf by combining European Space Agency data with advanced ground imaging. The discoveries mark the first successes of OASIS, a survey that narrows targets by looking for stars being gravitationally tugged by invisible companions. One find, HIP 71618 B, will serve as a test target for NASA’s upcoming Roman Space Telescope.
