A filmmaker gets a terminal diagnosis two days before Christmas, with a houseful of kids and a marriage that went cold years ago. Maria Sødahl pulls the story from her own brush with death. The result earns its tears instead of demanding them.

Anja is a filmmaker. Tomas is a theater director. They have raised a blended household of six children across two decades of a relationship that has gone cold and practical. Then Anja learns the brain tumor doctors treated a year ago has returned as a terminal metastasis. Maria Sødahl draws the story from her own near-fatal diagnosis, and the film is less about dying than about the marriage the diagnosis forces back into the open.

Andrea Bræin Hovig plays Anja with a clarity that refuses self-pity. She organizes her own scans and second opinions while the people around her go numb. Hovig lets the fear surface in small failures of control, a sharp word to a child, a collapse alone in a parked car. Stellan Skarsgård plays Tomas as a man who has retreated into his work and does not know how to be present until presence is mandatory. The two actors build a portrait of intimacy that has curdled into logistics and now has to relearn itself in days.

Sødahl writes and directs with a structure that counts down the days from December 23 to New Year’s. The holiday setting traps the family together and forces every unspoken grievance to the surface. The cinematography stays close and handheld in the domestic scenes and the camera keeps finding Anja at the edges of rooms full of people. Sødahl shoots the medical consultations in flat, bureaucratic light that drains them of drama. The restraint is the method. The film withholds the swelling score that a Hollywood version would lean on.

This is a film about the unfinished business between two people who assumed they had time. The diagnosis does not produce reconciliation on schedule. It produces honesty, and honesty is harder than grief. Sødahl refuses the catharsis the genre promises and finds something truer in its place.
