Jennifer Lawrence descends into postpartum madness in rural Montana. The performances work but the jagged edges make it a tough sit.
Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson have real chemistry and bring genuine energy to their roles as a couple unraveling in isolation. Sissy Spacek is perfectly cast as a mother carrying her own baggage. Nick Nolte shows up briefly and delivers exactly the grounding presence the film needs in those moments.
But Lynne Ramsay’s deliberately fractured approach to the material makes this one hard to watch. The jagged editing and disorienting structure serve the story of a woman losing her grip on reality, but serving the theme doesn’t make it enjoyable. The film wants you uncomfortable, and it succeeds. Whether that’s a recommendation depends on your tolerance for two hours of mounting dread.
Also, I don’t do movies with mistreated dogs. So there’s that.
