Gerard Butler chases O’Shea Jackson Jr. across Europe in a heist sequel that knows exactly what it is and delivers without apology. Sometimes that’s enough.
The first Den of Thieves was Heat for people who think Heat is too slow. This sequel takes the same energy and relocates it to Europe for a diamond heist involving the Panther mafia. The premise is absurd. The execution is competent.
Gerard Butler plays Big Nick the way he always plays Big Nick. Sweaty, aggressive, ethically compromised, and somehow still the protagonist. O’Shea Jackson Jr. returns as Donnie, the inside man who is now deep in the European diamond trade and way over his head. Their dynamic remains the best part of these films. Butler and Jackson have genuine chemistry. The script gives them scenes that breathe between the action set pieces.
Christian Gudegast directs with the same workmanlike efficiency he brought to the first film. He understands how to stage a heist sequence. He knows when to let the actors talk and when to blow something up. The European locations give the film visual texture that separates it from the Los Angeles-bound original. The supporting cast, including Evin Ahmad and Salvatore Esposito, do solid work without overshadowing the leads.
This is not high art. This is a meat-and-potatoes heist movie that respects genre conventions and executes them well.
