“Microsoft uses these links instead of regular web links to force users to open them in its Microsoft Edge web browser.”
Links all over the Windows shell use a special microsoft-edge:// scheme. A small app let half a million people send those links to their real default browser. Microsoft broke it in a preview build right after Firefox and Brave copied the trick. Microsoft lost an antitrust case over browser bundling in 2001. It learned to do it quieter.
