“The energy turnover of 1.3 gigajoule was achieved with an average heating power of 2.7 megawatts, whereby the discharge lasted 480 seconds.”
Wendelstein 7-X held plasma for eight minutes and hit 1.3 gigajoules, 17 times its best before a three-year rebuild. That figure is heating power going in, not fusion power coming out. The plant now runs 6.8 kilometres of cooling pipe just to survive the heat. The next target is 18 gigajoules and half an hour, which is still a long way from a power plant.
