“advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology must be standard equipment in all new passenger motor vehicles”

Section 24220 of the $1 trillion infrastructure bill requires new cars to “passively monitor the performance of a driver” and “prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if an impairment is detected.” Congress left most of the details to NHTSA. Thomas Massie’s amendment to strip it failed, with 19 Republicans joining all but one Democrat against him. Every new car gets a sensor that judges you and a switch that acts on the verdict, and the rules for both are still unwritten.
