“Scientists performed the first human test of an enzyme treatment that converts a donor kidney to a universal blood type.”

Researchers at UBC and Avivo Biomedical treated a donor kidney with enzymes that stripped away blood-type markers. Made it compatible with any recipient. If this scales, it fundamentally changes organ allocation. No more waiting for a type-matched donor while kidneys go to waste. The catch, as always with transplant breakthroughs, is whether it works long-term and at what cost.
