Julian Seward built Valgrind as a free alternative to Purify, the commercial tool most people couldn’t afford. Twenty years later Memcheck is still a standard part of testing for countless C and C++ projects. Volunteers wrote it. Most of the companies that ship code it debugged have never paid for it.
