Engineering salaries come out of sales and marketing, R&D, or maintenance. Growth work is easy to measure and R&D thinks in quarters at minimum. Maintenance is pure cost, and the best one company offered was “2 days every sprint” for non-functional work. Keep the lights on and you’re first out the door.
