Legacy WAL files grow without limit on a busy database when writers and long readers never let a checkpoint finish. Wal2 alternates between two files so one gets checkpointed and reset while the other takes writes. The catch is that it lives on a branch, and only builds from that branch can open the database. Everyone else gets SQLITE_NOTADB.
