“In newborns with a very low birth weight, continuous skin-to-skin contact immediately after delivery, even before the baby has been stabilized, can lower mortality by 25%.”
WHO guidance said to wait until a small baby was stable before putting it on the mother. About 75 percent of the deaths happen before that point. A trial of 3,211 newborns cut 28-day mortality from 15.7 percent to 12. The treatment needs almost no equipment, and nobody sells it.
