NHTSA’s Waymo probe covers 22 incidents, including robotaxis hitting gates, chains and parked cars. Part of the evidence is viral video of Waymos driving on the wrong side of the road. The crash-reporting order dates to 2021, and the regulator still needed bystanders with phones to catch the near-misses. The public is doing the safety testing for free, and the companies are charging for the rides.
