Mozilla ran the only open geolocation database built from public radio signals for 11 years. Skyhook waved patents at it in 2019, Mozilla settled, and the service starved from there. New keys stop today, cell data downloads get deleted April 10, and third parties lose access June 12. Mozilla keeps it for its own use cases. A patent threat never had to win in court to kill the open alternative.
