“Despite many passionate campaigns by cartographers and mapping enthusiasts, Web Mercator remains dominant.”
Web Mercator makes Greenland look the size of Africa. It stuck because every tile server on earth is built around it. Mapbox alone generates 5.7 billion tiles for its base maps. The fix reprojects those same Mercator tiles in the browser instead of reprocessing the planet. Cartographers lost the argument to the tiling scheme, not to the math.
