“With this move to OA the journals will no longer charge subscription fees and will instead be supported by Article Processing Charges (APCs), with the infrastructure to ensure that authors continue to face no financial barrier to publishing their science in the RAS journals.”
MNRAS and the other RAS journals go fully open access in January 2024, back to the first volumes from 1827. Readers stop paying. Authors start paying Article Processing Charges instead, and the press release never names a figure. Oxford University Press still publishes the journals. The bill moves from library budgets to grant budgets, and the publisher keeps collecting.
