The 40-hour week looks like progress only if you compare it to the 80-hour factory week of the 1800s. Medieval workers had long meal breaks, church holidays and seasons with little to do. A serf’s full day for a lord counted as two days of work. The factory invented the long week, and we got sold the 40-hour week as a gift.
