“Parker Solar Probe detected highly energetic particles traveling between 10 and 100 times faster than the solar wind, leading the researchers to believe that the fast solar wind is created by the reconnection of magnetic fields.”

At about 13 million miles from the sun, Parker caught the fast solar wind forming in funnels where supergranulation cells drag the magnetic field down. Opposing field lines break and reconnect, and particles fly out at up to 800 kilometers per second. Solar maximum is due in July 2025, and those storms hit satellites and power grids. The probe launched in 2018 to find where the wind comes from. The answer is magnetic reconnection in the funnels.
