“This is the first time a modern-day vaccine has been shown to protect people against Salmonella Paratyphi A, a disease that affects millions of people every year.”

Oxford researchers tested a live attenuated vaccine called CVD 1902 in 72 healthy adults who were then deliberately exposed to the bacteria under controlled conditions. Within 14 days, only 21% of vaccinated participants developed infection compared to 75% of the placebo group. Paratyphoid fever causes over 2 million cases annually with no existing vaccine. The researchers are now testing a combination typhoid-paratyphoid vaccine developed by India’s Serum Institute.
