“Data obtained through freedom of information requests by the University and College Union and shared exclusively with the Observer reveals that about 61% of core tutorial teaching is done by academics on fixed-term contracts or in hourly-paid roles.”
Oxford sells the tutorial as its crown jewel. Permanent professors teach about 34% of them. Christ Church took in £42.6 million in 2022-23 and advertised a full-time lectureship at £15,244, then called “full-time” an error when asked. One lecturer found that less than 15% of the hours he worked were claimable. Parents pay for the Oxford name and a PhD student on £37 an hour delivers it.
