“But when WIRED requested those records last month, OpenAI said its policy had changed, and the company provided only a narrow financial statement that omitted the majority of its operations.”
For seven years OpenAI told the IRS its bylaws and conflict-of-interest policy were available on request. WIRED asked by email and at the front door. It got a 2022 statement showing $44,000 in revenue and $1.3 million in expenses for the nonprofit alone, with the for-profit arm that sells ChatGPT left out. A board that just fired Sam Altman over trust and then took him back has every reason to keep the conflict rules locked up.
