“Maybe the joke was born old.”
A version of “that’s what she said” turns up in a book from 1973. The rabbi joke goes back to Nasreddin Hodja in the 1200s. The oldest surviving joke book is Greek and from the 4th century. Comedians have been recycling material for 1,600 years.
