“For cutting-edge platforms such as NVIDIA Grace Hopper or NVIDIA Blackwell, you must use the open-source GPU kernel modules. The proprietary drivers are unsupported on these platforms.”

Starting with R560, the default NVIDIA driver install switches to the open kernel modules under GPL and MIT. Maxwell, Pascal and Volta cards don’t work with them and stay on the proprietary driver. Systems that mix old and new cards stay proprietary too. NVIDIA first opened the modules for datacenter GPUs in 2022, and Grace Hopper and Blackwell now require them. Open source arrived when NVIDIA’s newest hardware needed it.
