The NRC certified NuScale’s 50 MW module, a design the Department of Energy has backed with more than $600 million since 2014. The first module in Idaho is due in 2029. The price per megawatt hour already jumped 53 percent before anyone poured concrete. Small and modular was supposed to fix nuclear’s cost problem, and the cost problem arrived first.
