“The fastest way to heat food and drink might also rank as the fastest route to ingesting massive quantities of minuscule plastic particles, says new research from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.”
Three minutes in a 1,000-watt microwave released more than 2 billion nanoplastics per square centimeter from baby food containers. The plastics were polypropylene and polyethylene, both FDA-approved. After two days, only 23% of kidney cells exposed to the highest concentrations survived. Infants on microwaved water take in the most, and their parents bought the containers off ordinary U.S. store shelves.
