Microsoft has built its Athena AI chips in secret since 2019, and OpenAI staff are already testing them. The goal is to stop paying Nvidia’s markup, with OpenAI alone estimated to need more than 30,000 A100s. Azure customers are not promised access. Microsoft cuts its own costs and keeps renting you the Nvidia hardware.
