The deal reportedly values OpenAI at $29 billion. Microsoft gets three quarters of the profits until it is paid back, then nearly half the company. OpenAI is burning cash on servers for a free chatbot that crossed 1 million users in five days. Bing has a small share of search, and Microsoft is paying $10 billion to rent a weapon against Google.
