“For older Kindles without Wi-Fi, this change could mean not connecting to the internet at all.”
Amazon sold Kindles whose selling point was built-in 3G, no Wi-Fi needed. The carriers are shutting 3G off, and some of those devices will never reach the Kindle Store again. Only owners of the very first model get a free replacement. The hardware still works. The connection it was sold on doesn’t.
