“Whilst familiar in our contemporary, terms such as ‘cyberspace’, ‘jacking-in’, ‘ICE’ and ‘the matrix’ were first introduced by Neuromancer, greatly influencing the dictionary that much of Cyberpunk borrows from and builds upon.”
Gibson coined “cyberspace” in Burning Chrome in 1982, two years before Neuromancer. The book didn’t invent the word. It made it stick. Gibson worried Blade Runner had already sunk him, and the novel went on to win the major science fiction awards anyway. Every hacker movie since has borrowed its vocabulary.
