“Indian manufacturers are beating Tesla and BYD at building energy-efficient electric cars.”
Tata came first at 106 Wh/km and Mahindra second at 113, ahead of Tesla and BYD, against a 131 Wh/km average. The buried number is worse for the industry than the ranking is good for India: only 8 of 22 major manufacturers improved efficiency at all and 12 got worse. Everyone is shipping heavier cars with bigger batteries and calling it progress. EVs are still under 5 percent of new sales in India, so the win is on paper for now.
