“This is the first record of mosquitoes occurring in the natural environment in Iceland.”

A guy near Reykjavík spotted a weird fly on his wine glass at dusk on October 16th. Turned out to be one of three Culiseta annulata mosquitoes. First ever confirmed in Iceland’s natural environment. The Nordic island and Antarctica were the last two mosquito-free places on Earth. Now it’s just Antarctica. The Natural Science Institute says they probably arrived by freight and can handle cold weather. Whether they survive an Icelandic winter remains to be seen. Warming temperatures have brought a parade of new insect species to the island. Another climate change canary.
