Google paid about $300 million for 10 percent of Anthropic and nobody reported it at the time. Anthropic separately named Google Cloud its “preferred cloud provider” the same week. Anthropic’s founders left OpenAI over its commercial turn after the 2019 Microsoft deal. Now each lab has its own Big Tech cloud landlord.
