“We’re making GitHub Copilot, an AI pair programmer that suggests code in your editor, generally available to all developers for $10 USD/month or $100 USD/year.”
GitHub trained Copilot on public code from developers who were never asked. Now it charges those developers $10 a month to get it back. Maintainers of popular open source projects get it free, which is the closest thing to an apology on offer. GitHub says nearly 40 percent of the code in files where it’s on is now written by the machine. Nobody has explained who owns that code.
