“Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s most northern state, is starting its switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice, and is planning to move from Windows to Linux on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions.”
Munich tried this with LiMux in 2004 and went back to Windows in 2017 at a cost of about €100 million. Lower Saxony followed it back in 2018. Both kept half their stack on Microsoft, which gave Redmond the compatibility complaints it needed. Schleswig-Holstein plans to replace email, directory and telephony too, but only the LibreOffice switch has a timeline.
