“At some point during the past weekend, the number of sounds which are available for download in Freesound has surpassed half a million.”
Half a million Creative Commons sounds, uploaded by volunteers and served from university infrastructure. Stock audio companies charge per clip for the same footsteps and door slams. Freesound gives them away and just made the downloads faster. Plenty of commercial work quietly depends on it.
