Google pulled JPEG XL out of Chrome in 2023 and told everyone it lacked ecosystem interest. Then Google Research wrote a Rust decoder to fix the security objection, and now Chrome intends to ship it too. The stated reason for killing it was never the real one. Four years lost so Google could sort out its own position.
