One of FFmpeg’s largest releases ever. Native decoders for formats nobody asked for but everyone will eventually need. Vulkan compute codecs for GPU acceleration. Whisper integration for transcription. The project also moved to their own Forgejo instance, finally escaping the GitHub monoculture. FFmpeg remains the duct tape holding the entire internet’s video infrastructure together. Every streaming service, every video editor, every random script converting formats. All of it runs through code these volunteers maintain for free.
