“The reservoir has historically held up to 44 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of helium, which includes both federally owned stored helium and native helium commingled with natural gas.”

The government is selling the Cliffside plant, the Bush Dome reservoir, 23 gas wells, 38,000 acres of mineral rights and a 423-mile pipeline that moves more than 2 million cubic feet of crude helium a day. About 4 Bcf of federal helium is left from that 44 Bcf peak. Congress ordered the sale in 2013. The private refiners on that pipeline will buy their crude helium from whoever wins the auction.
