“We find that disablement of fatty acid oxidation in cardiomyocytes improves resistance to hypoxia and stimulates cardiomyocyte proliferation, allowing heart regeneration after ischaemia–reperfusion injury.”
Adult heart cells switch from burning glucose to burning fatty acids, and then they stop dividing. Knock out Cpt1b in mice and the cells slide back to a less mature state through α-ketoglutarate and the KDM5 demethylase, and damaged hearts repair. The metabolic switch that powers the adult heart is the same one that stops it from healing. This is a gene knockout in mice, not a treatment.
