“Yifan had uncovered one of the largest hoaxes in Wikipedia’s history.”
One contributor used four sock puppet accounts to invent a medieval silver mine, a war over it and the people who fought it. Hundreds of Chinese Wikipedia articles cited each other, and they ran for a decade. A novelist caught it when a footnote on medieval mining pointed to a paper about 21st century automation. Nobody checks a citation when it sounds boring enough.
