“The FAA authorized Zipline International, Inc., to deliver commercial packages around Salt Lake City using drones that fly beyond the operator’s visual line of sight without visual observers.”
One company, one metro area, one approval letter. The FAA chartered its committee on beyond-line-of-sight rules in June 2021 and is still reviewing the final report. Until real rules exist, drone delivery in America runs on case-by-case exemptions, and Zipline’s customers become the data that writes the policy. Parachuting packages over Salt Lake City is the rulemaking process.
