“In 2022 alone, 177 environmental activists were murdered, or roughly one every other day, according to Global Witness, a U.K.-based watchdog group.”
At least 1,910 people were killed for defending land and forests between 2012 and 2022. Nearly nine in 10 of last year’s killings happened in Latin America, and Colombia alone accounted for three in 10. One third of the victims were Indigenous. The people doing the most to keep forests standing are the ones getting shot for it.
