The gas inside the chamber runs around 3,500 K, about half the temperature of the Sun’s surface. The trick is to run the cold propellant through channels in the walls before burning it. Other engines just let the walls burn away on purpose. A rocket engine survives by spending its fuel or its own body as coolant.
