“Paul Ginsparg is the founder of the preprint server arXiv.org, the first platform to exchange scientific discoveries among scientists immediately, openly and globally without review- and paywall restrictions.”

Ginsparg built arXiv in 1991 so physicists could share papers without waiting on a journal. Thirty years later, the publishers still charge universities to read research the universities paid for. The preprint server carried science through Covid while the journals were still in peer review. Half a million euros is a small thank-you for routing around an entire industry.
