“A common security risk associated with smart TVs is Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), which tracks what’s on your screen and sends this data to advertisers.”
Smart TVs ship with apps you cannot remove, operating systems that stop getting updates in a few years, and ACR that reports what you watch to advertisers. The Center for Digital Democracy documented the tracking in October. Dumb TVs that remain are mostly small 720p sets for the kitchen. Smart TVs put profit ahead of the viewer, and the viewer is the profit.
