“LLNL’s National Ignition Facility (NIF) conducted the first controlled fusion experiment in history to reach this milestone, also known as scientific energy breakeven, meaning it produced more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to drive it.”

Read “laser energy” carefully. The target got 2.05 megajoules and gave back 3.15. The electricity it took to fire those lasers is far larger and isn’t in the headline. It’s real physics and a real milestone. A power plant is still decades away.
