“Mega-publishers are saying electronic books do not wear out, but this is not true at all.”
The Archive has migrated its scanned books through about six formats, DjVu to PDF/A, and storage from tape to SSD. That costs thousands of computer-months. Publishers want libraries to pay again for ebooks on a timer because they claim digital never wears out. Their own formats and DRM break faster than the paper does. The license expires before the book would have.
