Members voted 358 to 144 to write both bans into the Terms of Use. The stated reason is cost. AI datacenter buildout drove up Codeberg’s hardware bills while the scrapers hammering the site paid nothing for what they took. Enforcement is the hard part, since nobody can reliably detect generated code. But a nonprofit host refusing to subsidize the companies externalizing costs onto it is a defensible line to draw.
