“Without proper controls, website owners have long faced a difficult tradeoff: allow your content to be used for AI training, or risk losing discoverability in search.”
That tradeoff was never a law of physics. Google, Apple and Microsoft built it by running training and indexing off the same crawler, so refusing one meant losing the other. Now all three agree to honor a separate signal, which is a quiet admission the bundling was a choice they made on purpose. It took a third party controlling a large slice of the internet’s front door to get them to unbundle it.
