California wants to bolt spyware onto every 3D printer to stop people from printing guns. It won’t stop anyone serious, because anyone printing a gun can just run open firmware. What it will do is put a monitoring layer on a general-purpose tool and hand the data to whoever asks. Ban a use case you don’t like, surveil everyone who owns the machine. The guns are the excuse, not the target.
